Deepening Our Relationship With Self

Years ago I had a client jokingly tell me that she was considering changing her facebook status to in a relationship with ‘my mat’ because her time spent on her mat had become so important to her; it had become her sanctuary, her safe place.

Getting on the mat teaches us to take refuge in our life, not from our life. - Judith Laseter

We all come to our yoga mats for different reasons, and those reasons may change each time we find our way there. But each time that we come to our mats, we are deepening our relationship with ourselves, which is truly the most important relationship that we have. It’s through our understanding of ourselves that we are able to strengthen our relationships with others, with the world around us, and with the divine.

Yoga teaches that the root of all suffering is the illusion of separateness. When we allow our sense of separateness to take charge we forget that we are all connected. Our yoga practice gives up the space to turn inward and connect with our true divine nature.
